DBKL To Start Demolishing Illegal Extensions In City - Tengku Adnan

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 5 (Bernama) -- The Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) will start demolishing illegal extensions in shops or houses, starting next month.

Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said DBKL would issue notices as well as advertise in local dailies, to notify owners of the exercise.

"The operation will be held throughout the city. Owners must submit an application to carry out any extensions to their premises. They can do it online (internet) or come to the DBKL office," he told reporters after a dialogue session with owners and beneficiaries regarding their land in Kampung Baru, here, today.

He added that there have been cases whereby owners rent their premises to foreigners and these foreigners start to carry out extensive extensions.

"Through our surveys, we have come across many buildings with illegal extensions or renovation," he said adding that such extensions were common in Cheras, Seputeh, Kepong, Taman OUG, Keramat and Kampung Baru.

Imam, Muezzins Told To Impart Knowledge Gained From Courses

HULU TERENGGANU, Sept 5 (Bernama) -- Imams and muezzins have been urged to impart knowledge that they have learned from courses to Muslims, particularly the younger generation.

Deputy Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Jailani Johari said this would enable young people to learn about Islam from mosque officials with authoritative knowledge on religion rather than from dubious sources, including the Internet.

He also called on imams and muezzins to learn computer applications to enable them to widen their knowledge and keep tabs on issues involving Muslims abroad by visiting authoritative Islamic websites, apart from relying on printed material.

Mosques and surau should take advantage of broadband coverage that has reached their areas, he said after launching the Imam and Muezzin Character Building Programme organised by the Hulu Terengganu Islamic Religious Office here today.

Police Open 56 Case Files Under CPA Following 'Ops Cantas' - IGP

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 5 (Bernama) -- The police have opened 56 case files under the Crime Prevention Act (CPA) after more than 3,000 detentions, following 'Special Ops Cantas' which was launched on Aug 17.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said, of the total, 21 people had been remanded to facilitate investigations under PCA Act 1959 and Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC).

"Nine cases will be prosecuted and 11 others investigated," he said after delivering his address at a one-day discourse titled, 'Society and Crime: Where Are We', here Thursday.

The event was organised by the National Professor Council (MPN), in cooperation with Berita Harian (BH).

On Ops Cantas, Khalid said it was fruitful in significantly reducing the crime index.

For example, from Aug 17 to 31, he said the police screened 139,342 people and arrested 3,205 suspects for investigation. A total 84,011 vehicles were checked for forbidden items such as firearms and drugs.

The inspector-general of police noted that a comparison of the statistics in the two weeks from Aug 1 to 16, and Aug 17 to 31, showed the impact of 'Ops Cantas' which resulted in a drop in violent crimes to 1,067 cases from 1,162 cases or 8.2 percent.

Khalid hoped the CPA would be amended promptly to enable the police to carry out their duties effectively, because violent crimes had gone up after the preventive laws, internal security act, emergency ordinance and restricted residence act were abolished.

He noted that if the statistics in the 20-month period before and after the abolishing of the preventive laws, namely from April 12, 2010 until Dec 21, 2011 and Dec 22, 2011 until Aug 31, 2013, were compared, figures for violent crime indicated a 5.43 per cent hike or 2,351 cases, to 45,664 cases from 43,313 cases.

The statistics of cases involving killing using firearms had also shown an increase from 64 cases to 130 cases, or an increase of 103.1 per cent, during the same period.

IGP Slams Those Who Questioned Samad's Midnight Arrest

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 5 (Bernama) -- Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar has slammed those who questioned the midnight arrest of Datuk A. Samad Said.

"The arrest was made according to procedures. The police went to Samad's house on Tuesday afternoon but he was not at home.

"Samad returned home at midnight and tried to sneak but we caught him. Why blame the police for arresting someone who shamelessly desecrated the flag of our beloved country?," he told reporters after presenting the keynote address at the discourse "Society and Crime - Where Are We" organised by the National Professors Council in collaboration with Berita Harian (BH) here on Thursday.

Khalid said the police had urged Samad to surrender himself but he failed to do so.

The national laureate was released on police bail yesterday after spending several hours giving a statement to the police.

Samad was arrested at 12:25am to assist investigation regarding the flying of Sang Saka Malaya on the eve of 56th Merdeka Day anniversary (Friday).

Bersih chairman Datuk S. Ambiga questioned the police for arresting Samad at midnight and described the action as harassment.

Local Councils Must Stop Approving Applications For Buildings Near Rivers - Mahdzir

KUALA NERANG, Sept 5 (Bernama) -- The Energy, Green Technology and Water Ministry urged the local councils to restrict applications for business premises or buildings in reserve land situated near rivers.

Its Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said preventing the building of premises near rivers would reduce waste being thrown into rivers which is the main source of untreated water.

"We welcome the action of the Selangor state government to stop all activities in reserve land near rivers to avoid contamination of river water. If possible we would like to see premises like car workshops, car wash, poultry farms situated near rivers, relocated," he told reporters at the Majlis Sumbangan Wang Tunai dan Pakaian Ihram to 100 Haj pilgrims at the Padang Terap Umno division office, here, on Thursday.

Last Friday, residents in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor were left high and dry when taps ran dry as four water treatment plants were closed due to a diesel spill in Sungai Selangor.

Department Of Statistics Diversifies Data Collection Methods

ALOR SETAR, Sept 5 (Bernama) -- The Department of Statistics Malaysia has diversified its method of data collection to supply fast and accurate information to ensure the country's plans can be executed in an orderly manner.

Chief Statistician Dr Abdul Rahman Hasan said data collection had focused on interviews, but now other methods such as self-completion, telephone, fax, e-mail and e-Survey had also been implemented.

In February 2009, the e-Survey method for the Monthly Manufacturing Survey was launched.

"It initially received poor response, but now, 1,449 organisations or 33 per cent of respondents use e-Survey to give their feedback," said Abdul Rahman, when launching the Importance of Statistics in the National Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) Seminar here Thursday.

He said the e-Survey gave respondents the flexibility to provide information when it suited them, and had a more friendly and interactive display when filling out data.

"The e-Survey will continue to be developed and used as a main mechanism in data collection, in line with the country's aspirations in enculturating innovation.

"Therefore, the department suggests that all quarters use the online system, such as e-Survey, to facilitate the data collection process," he added.

Meanwhile, Abdul Rahman said the e-Services facility was launched on April 2, this year, to help improve services to customers and stakeholders, in the department's official website.

"This service allows users to obtain data for free and buy publications online. We are also cooperating with Bernama (Malaysian National News Agency) to disseminate the statistics to the public," he added.
